The Kitui County Governor’s Cup has kicked off in earnest across Mwingi North and Mwingi Central, setting the stage for an exciting football showdown at the grassroots.
Several teams are locking horns in high tempo encounters, each eyeing a coveted slot at the county finals set for March at the iconic Kitui Stadium.
The pulsating football matches have witnessed end-to-end action, last-minute winners and dramatic penalty shootouts that have kept fans on the edge of their seats.
The tournament is spearheaded by the Kitui County Government under the leadership of Governor Dr. Julius Malombe and is meant to spot raw talent, build team spirit and unite communities through sports.
From the sub-counties, only the sharpest squads will advance for the county levels clash in March.
From Mwingi North and Central, the football fever will then shift to Kitui East and Kitui South on February 21–22, 2026, with games hosted at Mwitika Primary, Mwitika Mixed, Kikuu Primary, Kaling’a Primary, Mutomo Stadium, KMTC Mutomo, and St. Patrick’s Playgrounds.
At Kitui Central, the action will be witnessed on February 28 to March 1, 2026. Mwingi West and Kitui West will be on March 7 - 8, 2026.
The final mega clash will be at the world class Ithookwe Stadium in mid March where the top teams will be awarded cash prizes and trophies.
"The overall winner of the Kitui Governor’s Cup will be feted by the county government, and the winning team will earn the opportunity to represent Kitui County at the Kenya Youth Inter-County Sports Association (KYISA) Games,” explained Sports CECM Phoebe Mutemi.
