The second leg of the Kitui Governor’s Cup at the sub-county level now shifts to Kitui Central and Kitui Rural this weekend as the thrilling football bonanza gathers pace across the county.
Football Matches slated for February 28 - March 1, 2026 will be hosted at Kitui stadium and Kiusyani playgrounds.
The tournament has already ignited excitement in earlier rounds, with teams battling fiercely for top honors and a coveted place at the county level.
In Mwingi North, Super Eagles Kyuso (Men) and Sunshine Queens of Tharaka (Women) emerged victorious to secure their slots in the next stage.
From Mwingi Central, Mwingi Junior Stars and Mutwangombe FC topped their respective categories and will now advance to the county level finals.
They will join other top teams set to qualify from the remaining sub-county fixtures as the competition intensifies.
The subcounty tournament will then shift to Mwingi West and Kitui West on Mar 7 - 8, 2026 before proceeding to Kitui East and Kitui South in March 14 - 15, 2026.
The County Minister for Sports Phoebe Mutemi notes that the Governor’s Cup is more than just a football tournament. It is a flagship youth empowerment initiative aimed at identifying and nurturing grassroots talent, promoting discipline, teamwork and social cohesion among young people.
The competition is also providing a platform for exposure, mentorship and potential career pathways in sports.
Speaking on the progress of the tournament, Waziri Mutemi described the Governor’s Cup as a transformative platform for youth empowerment and grassroots talent development.
She emphasized that the competition is not merely about winning trophies but about building character, unity and opportunity for young people across Kitui County.
The grand finale is expected to culminate in a mega clash at the 10,000 seater Ithookwe Stadium in March, where top teams will walk away with cash prizes and trophies in what promises to be a celebration of talent and community spirit.
